What’s The Story Behind Carmelo Anthony’s “Blood Brothers” Painting From His 2005 MTV Cribs Episode?
Right off the bat, some of you may have no idea what I’m even on about. So let’s back the whole truck up for a minute.
Back in 2005, an ascending Carmelo Anthony was taking the NBA and the Western Conference by storm. Bringing genuine star power and energy to a Denver Nuggets team that had gone 17-65 the season prior to Melo’s arrival.
Within this first chapter of Carmelo Anthony’s NBA journey, there lies a curiosity that has lingered for exactly 20 years now and it involves MTV Cribs. The show that gave America a peek at how the celebrities like to live.
It’s here where we have Carmelo Anthony showing off his freshly minted Denver estate. You can watch the entire episode here. It’s well worth it and features Melo showing off his ESPY award, a couple of big silver dog statues and his sick ‘House Of The Dead 2’ arcade cabinet.
But those are all frankly common Cribs fare. We’re here for the “Blood Brothers”.
Yes, that was a painting of Carmelo Anthony standing together with Jesus Christ in a puddle of blood.
*unspools list*
Who painted that?
Does Melo still own the “Blood Brothers” painting?
How did he even acquire it?
Did he commission it himself or was it a gift?
A gift from who?
Well. Here’s what we do know.
We know that Carmelo is a genuine art collector. Going as far as meeting and collaborating with artists whose work he enjoys. See this 2018 piece from Galerie for more in-depth details.
We also know that Carmelo helped produce a limited series called “Blood Brothers”. But this was based on the book of the same name regarding the lives of Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali. So, in this case, the name is just a coincidence.
And… that’s kind-of where the trail goes cold. Every few years, someone brings up Melo’s Jesus painting and then quickly moves on.
But this time is different. Because like most of us, Carmelo Anthony has a podcast. He could potentially finally reveal the story behind the famous painting if we throw him & his team some comments and ask nicely.
If all else fails though, I also sent him a DM as a backup plan. But I have a moderate to strong feeling that plan’s already fallen through.
