The Deele Fall In Love At The ‘Shoot ‘Em Up Movies’
When it comes to music videos, some artists want to create grand concepts that make you ponder the meaning behind the music. Some just want to deliver you a clear performance of the band or artist so that you can see them as the main attraction. Others still fall into the category of delivering a video that is dictated by the lyrics in the actual song.
When it came time for Ohio R&B group The Deele to cut a video for their song ‘Shoot ‘Em Up Movies,’ they already had their blueprint ready to go.
The song itself is about a man going to see an old Western “Shoot ‘Em Up” movie and falling in love with a young lady who takes a seat next to him. Well, wouldn’t you know it, that’s exactly what the music video is about; down to the most minute detail.
The video gets rolling with The Deele entering an old style movie house and catching a glance at some big oaf herranging the concessions lady. The Deele aren’t having any of it and calmly tell the guy to leave the lady alone. This soft-spokenly mild threat is enough to scare this brute straight and he backs off, saying he doesn’t want any trouble.
God bless The Deele, who are, apparently, the only ones who came out to watch this Western movie on a Friday night. But who can blame them? Seeing as they are also the ones starring in this old black & white film.
As The Deele sit back and watch themselves as cowboys, it also starts to set in that they’re writing the beats of this video as the song progresses in real time.
“Then all at once an angel sat down next to me, so I had to think of something quick.” Sure enough, the lady from the lobby sits down next to our hero as the camera cuts back to him pondering his next move.
“We talked and talked, as the bad guys shot up the town.” Right on cue, as we cut to the bad guys ambushing a cabin with pistols in hand. All the while, our two lovers are talking and flirting in the crowd.
It’s all good fun and the whole idea of falling in love at an old timey Western film is just far-fetched enough to strike a clean balance between cool & corny, even for 1987.
There’s even a few nice visual tricks. Chief among them, a moment where the lady steps into the movie screen and joins The Deele inside the Shoot ‘Em Up movie. To say nothing of the detail and reverence for those old films that The Deele seem to have here. Complete with a roped up damsel in distress and one of the bad guys getting bonked with a frying pan.
‘Shoot ‘Em Up Movies’ succeeds by being exactly what it claims to be. If you came in wanting a love story at an old Western show, you got it. If not? There’s always the popcorn.
