‘Somebody For Me’ Finds Heavy D Looking For Love On His Own Terms
If there’s one thing you need to know about Heavy D, the self-proclaimed Overweight Lover, it’s that he’s got enough confidence for him, The Boyz, and his listeners. That confidence is electric and infectious because Heavy D never pushes himself on others. Instead, he’s presenting himself to the world.
Full of charm to spare and butter-smooth bars, Heavy D puts all of himself out there and wants someone to take him for who he is. But if you won’t? That’s OK, because he knows he’s got a lot to offer someone and he doesn’t mind waiting. So long as it means waiting for the right person.
‘Someone For Me’ off 1989’s Big Tyme is the perfect calling card for Heavy D. The track itself is a perfect blend of New Jack Swing energy and genuine rap bonafides that Heavy D and collaborator Teddy Riley had quickly become known for at that time.
The music video shows Heavy D & The Boyz performing on a set painted in De Stijl art style. Heavy D dressed in a big dark suit, The Boyz dressed in similar, yellow suits. Everyone is absolutely light on their feet and killing it. Even label-mate Al B Sure! joins in with an assist.
Various women are shown with their bodies mixing and matching in sections of three from top to bottom. Each variant showcasing another love lost for Heavy D as he raps about traveling the world looking for a woman who wants him for who he is, not because he’s a hot MC or can sell millions of albums.
It’s 1990 when this video came out and if I hadn’t told you, there’s an excellent chance you already assumed as much from the bright primary colors and those big suits. But with that said, they never go overboard with the colors or set design. Everything exists as a great background vibe. Never overshadowing Heavy D and always positioning him front and center, letting his slick rhymes and larger than life charisma do the real heavy lifting.
The secret to Heavy D is he boasts, but he doesn’t brag. He’ll tell you how he’s worth your affections, but he’s not here to feign interest if things aren’t clicking. He’s not the typical Lothario you may be used to seeing in your music videos. But dammit if the ladies didn’t go crazy for him just the same.
‘Somebody For Me’ gives us Heavy D at the beginning of the height of his powers. Swooping in like a house of fire and putting all the other Pop Stars and playboys on notice. This man called himself the Overweight Lover and made it instantly stick in pop culture as a badge of honor. His confidence is at an all time high, to the point where it gives the viewer a bit of a pick-me-up as well.
Heavy D shows us that no matter who you are, there’s someone for you. Even if you have to wait for them to find you, it’s not worth playing someone else. Because you end up just playing yourself.
